Numerology is the third of a series of six pieces produced by Naomi Perera & Adam Langley with the assistance of the Leeds Conservatoire 2021 Graduate Fund.

Originally developed for the duo’s appearance at the 2020 edition of the Sounds Like This festival, Numerology is an outlier amongst their works as it features prominent vocals.

This piece was initially conceived as an exercise in polymetre. Opening with a simple electronic pulse, the rhythmic complexity is gradually increased layer by layer, with Naomi’s melodic lines dancing around the pulses while electronic processing augments the flute’s sound. The lyrics then avalanche into the piece at the midpoint and focus on numerology – the belief in the mystical relationship between numbers and destiny – with Naomi giving a powerful distortion laden spoken performance. The vocals alternate with bursts of distorted flute and electronic noise as the piece builds towards its conclusion.

The 1 is aggressive, a necessary energy. The 1 is jealous and stubborn. The 1 is the most difficult of all lovers. 1 walks upright.

In the shape of the 2 you will recognise the survivor. Her form and servitude. The 1 will break and shatter but the 2 will bend. The number 2 is jealous. She will claw her adversary to pieces.

The 3 is in need of guidance. The 3 has little spiritual depth. Jealousy stems from the fact that the 3 knows. But 4 prefers to toil in quiet obscurity. 4 is unremarkable. The 4 values his moral convictions.

5 is an adventurer. The 5 cannot tolerate anything predictable and anything conventional bores her. The 5 has an uncompromising demand for freedom. The 5 is a symbol of dynamic motion. The 5 is random energy.

6 is harmonious. 6 is motherhood. 6 sacrifices and protects. The 6 moves gracefully. But the 6 is egotistical at heart. Beware a cynical 6, for she is a merciless wolf.

The number 7 is the seeker , the thinker, the searcher of Truth. The 7 knows that nothing is exactly as It appears and reality is often hidden behind illusions. The 7 is the intellectual, the 7 is the dreamer. 7 is an explorer of the obscure.

8 is a realist. 8 inherits frustration and hate. 8 is authority. 8 is authority. 8 is authority.

The 9 is conscious. She walks like a queen . 9 is an impossible lover. 9 is egotistic, 9 is vindictive. 9 denotes the completion of era.
