about

Hush is the fourth in a series of six pieces produced by Naomi Perera & Adam Langley with the assistance of the Leeds Conservatoire 2021 Graduate Fund.

Hush developed out of a series of experiments of Naomi dueting with samples of her own flute playing. The piece was further work-shopped for performance at an electronic music concert in York, with Adam’s electronics taking on a more prominent role.

The piece begins with solo flute, before Naomi abruptly switches to bursts of vocalisations, and the electronics enter with pulsating textures and surges of noise that engage in a call and response with the vocals. Around the halfway mark, melodic flute phrases start to emerge from the tumult, becoming increasingly angular until Naomi switches back to the vocalisations, this time with the electronics substituting noise for a loop of angular flute, which gradually disintegrates as the piece fades out.
